| President Obama and the Democrat controlled Congress passed a massive $789 billion expansion of government literally overnight, while not one member of Congress or the public had an opportunity to read the legislation, let alone provide any input. You may recall that the President campaigned on transparency.
The President also campaigned on passing legislation without pet project earmarks. He is about to sign the $410 billion Omnibus Appropriations Bill for fiscal year 2009, which contains 8600 pet projects by members of Congress. He and his staff calls that “last year’s business, let’s just move on.”
We have heard the President, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi talk of bi-partisan cooperation many times in speeches. Yet, Republican ideas or alternatives have been ignored and met with responses of “we won, we wrote the bill”.
Despite the thousands of emails and phone calls we and others have generated, they continue to pass runaway spending legislation loaded with sneak-a-taxes, new taxes and funding for new government programs, while not seriously addressing the big problems of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid spending.
An equally big problem is the soon to be “Worse Than Expected” shortfall in federal tax revenue, which puts us on a certain trajectory for an extended recession.
In the first 100 days of President Obama and the Democrat controlled Congress, it’s been business worse than usual in Washington D.C. We now have an economic crisis and a leadership crisis.
Be reminded that our IT movement is a not a “sprint”.
It’s a “marathon”.

An interesting article by Herman Cain:
A National Bad Attitude
Consistent bad news will eventually lead to a bad attitude, and a bad attitude leads to failure. Just ask any high achiever in business, sports or any endeavor of life.
Since the summer of 2008, we have been fed a constant diet of more and more bad news about the economy, the credit crisis, the housing crisis, the recession, political scandals, a dysfunctional federal government, crooked politicians, crooked lenders, crooked borrowers and crooked executives. Read the full story.

After I read this story, the Republicans deserved what they got this past election. But we must start from the beginning of this economic mess.
President Clinton’s tenure was characterized by economic prosperity and financial deregulation, which in many ways set the stage for the excesses of recent years. Among his biggest strokes of free-wheeling capitalism was the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which repealed the Glass-Steagall Act, a cornerstone of Depression-era regulation. He also signed the Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which exempted credit-default swaps from regulation. In 1995 Clinton loosened housing rules by rewriting the Community Reinvestment Act, which put added pressure on banks to lend in low-income neighborhoods. Read this 1999 NY Times article: Fannie Mae eases credit to aid mortgage lending.
Second, in a 2003 NY Times article, the Bush administration wanted regulation on both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac:
The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.
Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry.
The plan is an acknowledgment by the administration that oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — which together have issued more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding debt — is broken. A report by outside investigators in July concluded that Freddie Mac manipulated its accounting to mislead investors, and critics have said Fannie Mae does not adequately hedge against rising interest rates.
I found the original bill that was intrduced as H.R. 2803: Housing Finance Regulatory Restructuring Act of 2003.
Rep. Edward Royce (R-CA) was the only sponsor, there were no co-sponsors and the damn bill never made it out of committee which means it never even made it to the house to be voted on. And guess why? Because of major lobbying that was done by Fannie and Freddie, we’re talking $200 million in lobbying.
Which brings me to this story that I read today.
Lawyers hired by mortgage finance giant Freddie Mac are quietly investigating the firm’s own $2 million lobbying campaign, The Associated Press has learned. The lobbying effort helped quash proposed new regulations on the company before the housing market collapsed.
Back in 2005, the Bush administration tried again at getting oversight on Fannie and Freddie through the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005 which was sponsored by Chuck Hagel (R-NE).
The inquiry inside Freddie Mac follows stories by the AP about the company secretly hiring Republican consulting firm DCI Group of Washington to stop a proposal in the Senate in 2005 sponsored by Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. The legislation would have forced Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to sell hundreds of billions of dollars worth of assets from their portfolios of mortgages and mortgage-backed securities. At the time, the portfolios were highly lucrative but their value plunged when the housing market collapsed.
_An accounting of the work done for the $2 million in payments to the DCI Group. It targeted 17 Republican senators in 13 states working to defeat Hagel’s regulatory legislation by convincing prominent constituents and financial contributors the bill would hurt the housing boom. The measure was never brought to a vote and died.
Well thanks alot assholes! I have been so ignorant this entire time and putting a substantial amount of blame on the Democrats and now the real truth finally comes out. This one is really on the Republicans. They had control of Congress and could have done something about it. But, Democrats and Republicans are all the same. They will screw their own kind for money and have no respect for the citizens that they are supposed to serve. The people that were involved in this should be hung publicly!

Hello Intelligent Thinker!
As the legislative sausage called “Economic Stimulus” continues to move through Congress for approval, it still contains a lot more spending than incentives for businesses and workers.
That probably will not change as the legislation moves to conference between the Senate and the House, and the new estimate by the Congressional Budget Office of $838 billion will probably go up and not down.
As expected, Republican Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania voted with all the Democrats to advance the bill. I guess bi-partisan means three Republican votes in the Senate, and no Republican votes in the House as voted on last week.
President Obama and Senator Harry Reid still claim that it will create four million jobs, provide a tax cut for the middle class, and invest in America’s future.
The devil is in the details, and there are a lot of devils in this bill. Many of the detail devils we do not even know about yet, because it is moving so fast.
Because of all the media attention on the hundreds of billions of dollars in the “Stimulus Bill”, the public paid little attention to the $35 billion SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program) signed by President Obama. The amount is not the issue by Washington standards, but expanding the eligibility requirements to include adults and higher income families is the issue. It is supposed to be about covering children in low-income families, not about a back door approach to socialized medicine.
We have a whirlwind SCHIP bill passed into law, and a soon to be whirlwind “Stimulus Bill” that is a long way from the rhetoric of President Obama.
Next up on the Democrat controlled whirlwind agenda, the “Employee Free Choice Act”. My latest article (Card Check Lies) makes the case for replacing the words ‘free choice’ with ‘no choice’ in the title. You make the call.
