Obama Cuts Oil and Gas Subsidies

The President’s budget highlights, released last week, took the ax to major subsidies to the oil and gas industry. Through the elimination of several tax breaks and royalty loopholes, the Administration tallied more than $30 billion in savings for U.S. taxpayers. The budget proposed repealing and adjusting oil and gas giveaways that included longstanding subsidies such as the passive loss exemption for oil and gas properties, and the percentage depletion allowance for oil and natural gas and the expensing of tangible drilling costs.

Who is trying to increase the price tag of the economic stimulus bill? You guessed it .. lobbyists. Big surprise there.

Obama decided to take a break from the White House yesterday and read books to children at a local charter school. Charter school? Isn’t this going to torque the teacher’s unions a bit? Why not go to a regular government school where, after all, the kids likely can’t read the books on their own?

Apparently the $825 billion wasn’t enough for Democrats who wanted $25 billion more for highways, mass transit, and water projects. Luckily the Republicans were able to stop this one.

On February 11th, CEOs from banks that received bailout money will be appearing before Congress to explain how they spent the funds. This ought to be interesting.

Speaking of Cuba and oil .. it plans to resume oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. Cuba can do that. We can’t. We have Democrats. Cuba doesn’t.
