Carnival of the Libertarians for August 3rd, 2008
This issue of the Carnival of the Libertarians is brought to you by me, Kevin Colby. This is my first opportunity to host the carnival and I look forward to hosting future issues. Since this may be your first time here I just want to let you know a little about myself. I am someone who believes in freedom, liberty and personal responsibility. There have been some libertarians who have attacked me by saying that I am not a true libertarian due to my stance on the war on terror. I am however, a libertarian, and part of what freedom and liberty in this country stands for is the right to believe in what you believe in regardless of whether or not it is in 100% agreement with a particular party or organization. My goal is to continue to raise awareness on current issues and to see this country climb out of the hole it’s in and return to being a great nation.
So without further delay, I bring you the newest issue of the Carnival of the Libertarians.
Libertarianism
Mike presents Most Influential Books posted at The New Sons of Liberty
This book list is a great resource for people who want to read more about Libertarian ideas and philosophies. Whether you are just discovering Libertarianism or have been a Libertarian for years you should find one of these books an interesting and informative read.
Jeffrey Stingerstein presents Time to Reward Failure and Irresponsible Spending posted at Disillusioned Words.
Good article on the housing market and personal responsibility. Don’t you just love how the government always feels they need to step in where they don’t belong?
Free Markets
NotYourDaddy presents Economics Lessons for Liberals: Minimum Wage posted at Government is not your Daddy..
This article discusses the negative impact that increased minimum wage has on businesses. Liberals want to tax corporations and raise wages but they don’t realize the impact that financially crippling these companies and forcing them to sell and move overseas has on this country.
Doug Ragan presents Congress Opens Self To Law Suit Over Oil Prices posted at I’m A Pundit Too.
Doug proposes that we sue Congress over the price of oil in order to get them to lift the ban against drilling in US territory. I am with you 100% on this one.
APH presents Urbanism Legend: Gas Taxes and Fees Cover All Costs of Road Use posted at Market Urbanism.
This post looks at the extent of the subsdy to automobile use. What’s the proper solution? Just raise the gas tax and let politicians battle over the right amount to cover opportunity costs and externalities? Or even better: privatize the roads, and let the market sort out the optimal use of roads for automobiles.
Anthony Luafalealo presents Oil: The #1 Reason We Should Return to the Gold Standard posted at Amateur Economists.
This article compares the price of oil in dollars and its value in terms of gold to illustrate how much oil would cost if the U.S. returned to the gold standard today. The author concludes that, if the U.S. dollar was based on gold, the price at the pump would be significantly lower than it is right now.
Michael Bass presents Wal-mart, Walgreens, a Prescription Hell | Debt Prison posted at Debt Prison.
His story is a good example of how government control and regulation are hurting us. He has a great last line to his story, “America….. you are literally going to regulate yourselves to death!”
Mike Gogulski presents Parsing the politicization of childbirth posted at nostate.com.
Let’s continue with the idea of government getting involved in things it has no business getting involved in: Making giving birth at home illegal. Here’s an excerpt from this article: “The American Medical Association has agreed to support proposed legislation that, some physicians say, could make make having a planned birth in one’s home difficult, to virtually impossible.”
Who do these people think they are by trying to ban home births? Doesn’t it just make you crazy when people think that they know what is best for everyone?
Doug Ragan presents My Presidential Campaign — Health Care posted at I’m A Pundit Too.
Doug begins to lay out his political platform if he were running for President. He begins here with his stance on the health care issue.
Chris Harris presents An idea to fix mortgage origination posted at New venture outsourcing blog.
Chris gives an idea about how to fix mortgage origination. I think that with the current state of our economy and housing market we should be open to all new ideas. Hint hint…to all of you in Washington.
Jay presents Record Federal Deficit posted at Hotfix America.
The federal debt is continually a growing problem. Jay’s article is right that with either upcoming candidate it isn’t likely to improve because they both plan a lot of spending.
2nd Amendment
Archvillain presents Re-visiting the Police State posted at A Dark and Sinister Force for Good.
Archvillian gives us an article about Washington DC government violating individual right to own and bear arms.
Other
Eclectic Bird presents Political Junkies Check This Out posted at What Is Up With Politics Today?.
Thanks for this link. I never realized that CNN had a virtual political market. Now this looks like fun.
Political Humor
Michael Bass presents Obama the Messiah with Disciples (pic) posted at Debt Prison.
Thanks Michael for this funny picture.

part of what freedom and liberty in this country stands for is the right to believe in what you believe in regardless of whether or not it is in 100% agreement with a particular party or organization
But freedom is not using the Libertarian Party’s logo on a document that expresses non-Libertarian positions.
Freedom is not using someone else’s property to exercise your freedom.
