The cost of illegal immigrants to the American taxpayer
I support legal immigration. If you come over here the right way to become a citizen of The United States I’m okay with that. But when you just storm across our borders, you are an invader. Read 14 reasons why we need to get control of illegal immigration:
1. $11 Billion to $22 billion is spent on welfare to illegal aliens each year by state governments. V
2. $2.2 Billion dollars a year is spent on food assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches for illegal aliens.
3. $2.5 Billion dollars a year is spent on Medicaid for illegal aliens.
4. $12 Billion dollars a year is spent on primary and secondary school education for children here illegally and they cannot speak a word of English!
5. $17 Billion dollars a year is spent for education for the American-born children of illegal aliens, known as anchor babies.
6. $3 Million Dollars a DAY is spent to incarcerate illegal aliens.
7. 30% percent of all Federal Prison inmates are illegal aliens.
8. $90 Billion Dollars a year is spent on illegal aliens for welfare social services by the American taxpayers.
9. $200 Billion Dollars a year in suppressed American wages are caused by the illegal aliens.
10. The illegal aliens in the United States have a crime rate that’s two and a half times that of white non-illegal aliens. In particular,their children, are going to make a huge additional crime problem in the US.
11. During the year of 2005 there were 4 to 10 MILLION illegal aliens that crossed our southern border also, as many as 19,500 illegal aliens from terrorist countries.
12. The National Policy Institute, “estimated that the total cost of mass deportation would be between $206 and $230 billion or an average cost of between $41 and $46 billion annually over a five year period.”
13. In 2006 illegal aliens sent home $45 BILLION in remittances back to their countries of origin.

And who *profits* from all this illegal immigration? Big businesses. So illegal immigrants are contributing to the American economy; it’s just that the profits are privatized — Big Business gets ‘em all — while the costs are socialized, i.e., the taxpayers pick up the tab.
How come we never hear any right-wingers complaining about this kind of socialism?

This is not a post; it’s a rant. The sources you cite (FAIR, CIS) are openly biased, and politically motivated. There are certainly costs to illegal (and legal) immigration, but the numbers look nothing like what you’re presenting here, when more objective and scientific sources estimate them.
You are uncomfortable about immigration; that’s fine. But if you have to use unreliable data to justify that discomfort, that’s a problem.

Other than real criminality, which ought to be punished, what I see here is a laundry list of things the state IS doing for “illegals”, followed up with a call for the state to do something MORE.

Bobby Friend claims that some of the sources are biased. What he doesn’t know is that some of the “facts” [sic] are false. Take for example the 30% of all federal inmates are illegal aliens. That’s a lie. No statistic supports that. In fact the actual statistic (it varies from month to month obviously) is that 20something percent of federal inmates are criminal aliens. Criminal aliens includes all non-citizen foreign born criminals. He changed the term “criminal alien” to “illegal alien”
Another is the illegal aliens send $45 billion in remittances in 2006. The total remittances in 2006 was $45 billion which included money sent by illegal aliens, legal aliens and citizens. He changed it to make the effect of illegal aliens seem more severe.
The other “facts” [sic] are either outright lies or exaggerated also.
Which begs the question: If the effects of illegal immigration were so bad, why do those who oppose it find it necessary to lie about it?

Some of my dear friends are illegal aliens from Mexico. I love them dearly but the bottom line is that they are here illegally and don’t belong here. Every country has an annual quota set by the USA for immigrants entering this country. The quota for immigrants from Mexico is 100,000 per year. Approximately one million illegal immigrants per year (3,000 to 4,000 every day)come into the United States via our Southern border of which most are Mexican. Representative Steve King from Iowa states that illegal aliens murder 12 Americans every day which equals over 30,000 since 9/11/01 which is more than we have lost fighting all of the wars since 9/11/01. He also states that 13 Americans are killed every day (over 33,000 per year) by drunken illegal alien drivers. In the first quarter of 2006, 29% of the prison population in the USA were illegal aliens which cost the American people $1.6 million dollars a year. I am sure that this figure has increased in two years. It’s estimated that over the lifetime of the head of each household of the illegal alien population the cost to the American taxpayer will be $1.1 million dollars. The cost of additional schools, overworked police departments, jails that have to be built or expanded, increased services that must be provided such as electricity, natural gas, etc., the strain on our natural resources such as water, gasoline, etc., increased taxes to the American people, increased crime, the strain on hospital budgets especially OBGYN and emergency facilities, the drain on the welfare system and WIC, and identity theft, makes any economic contribution to this country by illegal aliens insignificant. Increased funding and manpower to ICE is needed to enforce existing immigration laws. Severe penalties for employers who hire illegal aliens should be enforced and the illegal aliens will go home on their own. Some have already returned to their country of origin. Then they can apply to come back legally. That’s the way it is supposed to work. That is within the law.

i had to do research for my school of illegal immigration.
i inderstand that illegal iimigration has to be stopped but hey.. illegal immigrants take most of the jobs americans DON’T WANT!! If they were really desperate for the jobs americans woul be working in the fields as are a lot of illegal immigrants. Illegal aliens also pay taxes and if americans were so loyal they wouldn’t hire illegal immigrants to do the work (cheaper) and would hire americans.
Big business earnd BIG from deportation centers. People there are are charged 6 times for a phone call the normal rate. Here i am talking about the violationds of the human right of these places. There is no health care or good food. I am talking about the illegal immigrants and american citizens thee. Is double jeopardy right? If an immigrant that became a citizen steals a shirt when she was a teenager and spends time in jail later should be deported becuase of that? That’s what happens alot. So instead of talking all just about how illegal immigrants “drain” the economy you should be reforming immigrant laws.

Sorry, bad joke. The cost of illegals will bankrupt this country and make it a financial disaster we leave to our children and grandchildren. The bail outs are small potatos compared to the annual cost now and in the future if we don’t do something now. We need to send them home.
If illegals were not here, the growers would have to pay a living wage or find mechanical answers to picking their crops. A living wage can be paid, just ask the garbage collectors from new york. 20 years ago they won a living wage when the city swore the citizens could not afford it.

In a free market, which we do not have, immigrants would do wonders for our economy. They would legally be able to do the jobs that Americans wouldn’t do, for rates Americans would not take. This would make companies more efficient because they’d have more money left over for jobs that they otherwise couldn’t pay as much for, because they were being forced to pay a minimum wage. Both of these facts would mean lower prices for everyone, which in turn means greater overall prosperity.
The only reason immigrants are a problem are because of the enormous amount of taxes we all are forced to pay (a total of around $3 trillion a year), and because of the fact our market is not free — once we go back to a truly free market, free from regulation, restriction, protectionist tariffs and subsidies, free from minimum wage laws and free from inflation from the Federal Reserve, immigrants would no longer be an issue. In fact, they’d be a major asset.

I am doing a research paper on the effects of Illegal Immigration on our economy. ALmost if not all of the claims in this little rant are false. However, it doesn’t change the fact that illegal immigration is draining our economy. FAIR is biased, but I have read and read and they include the fact that illegals pay taxes. However the taxes the pay are just over half of what they use. I read an artical on the Washington post website, that stated
“Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes, creating a net fiscal deficit of $10.4 billion”
So 10.4billion dollars in unpayed debt from illegal immigration…thats not a negligeable amount.
Oh and the person who said the jobs aren’t wanted is full of shit. Our economy is in a terrible state, anyone who is unemployed currently I am sure would kill to have minamum wage picking tomatoes in a field…. however they can’t get the jobs, because the money grubbing business owners would much rather pay less taxes and less money to get the same job done.

I dont support legal or illeagle immigration these minorities dont give two shits about this country, and all they do is come to this country to exploid it not embrace it. And its not just money these “border jumpers” if there is even a border any more are taking its jobs too they more hours for less money. they dont care about our economy or taxes or even the united states. the statue of liberty says “give me your tired your hunggry and your poor” well its us americans who are tired and hungry and poor. Talk to anyone in the medical field, law enforcement, and they will tell you stories that will send chills up and down, in and out your spine about illegals here in the U.S.. My husband is retired from Law enforcement - there is not enough room on the page to tell the horror stories about illegals here in the states. Our Protected policy makers do not have a clue about real life and the dangers/costs to our personal safety and health. They can risk OUR health and safety for the sake of getting themselves re-elected to office. What with private jets, body guards, and the best health care. I am not just talking about people spilling over the border, but those flying into our airports everyday. We now have a free for all gaping hole where illegals can come into our country with diseases once eradicated from the U.S., plus new ones. Out of control would be an understatement. Anyone paranoid about germs or not would be panicked if they knew what “give us your tired and poor” has progressed to; add sick, diseased, demented, ad nauseum. You get the picture, at least those of you with a thread of common sense.

Who told you that illegal aliens are all migrant farm workers? Do you read the news? How about 100 arrested in a raid on a Washington state engine plant. That’s a factory, not a plant growing in a field. Or 300 arrested at a Columbia Farms poultry processing facility, in S.C. Note: “Farms” is just part of the name. 200 arrested at a Delmonte Foods processing facility.
Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security said in a recent interview that illegals are historically drawn to jobs in residential new construction, food service, and the hotel industry. They work in landscaping and lawn maintenance, commercial construction, home remodeling, and for sub contractors doing road work and bridge building for government agencies (federal, state and local). And, yes, they’re farm laborers.
What is this nonsense about illegal aliens doing the jobs Americans don’t want? I personally know carpenters, roofers, drywall installers, bricklayers, tile installers, painters, and siding installers who were all refused employment in favor of illegal aliens. Don’t point your fingers at us and cry HATE MONGER! This, for me, has nothing to do with hate. It is a legal issue.
Illegally entering the U.S., or purposefully overstaying a temp. visa, is just part of the problem. If you want someone to blame, look towards the dishonest, unconscionable employers and building contractors out there. Not to mention ineffectual or simply corrupt politicians, who for reasons mostly driven by greed, choose to hire, aid, or avoid the illegality of illegal aliens. Illegals, I might add, from any nation, like Barack Obama’s aunt (an illegal from someplace in Africa).
Look to the leaders in sanctuary cities who blatantly tell their law enforcement and social services employees to break the law when dealing with illegals. Better yet, look towards the double dealing federal government officials who arbitrarily decide to refuse to uphold our immigration laws, or worse yet, insult and deride I.C.E. agents for doing what the government is paying them to do.
Please, get the facts. Even the Pew Hispanic Center says that native born Hispanic Americans feel that illegal immigration is hurting our nation. It is complicated, but if immigration (and all its associated issues), is viewed in a holistic context, then the pieces - and the improprieties - start to come together.
Be that as it may, many cities across America, as well as the federal government, say that the overall direct and indirect costs to society, associated with illegal immigrants, is more than illegals put back into the system. They affect everything you affect. Everything! The problem is, they don’t pay their share. Either they don’t pay taxes, or the low income bracket they fall into generates an improportionately small amount of tax revenue. Meanwhile, as a whole, they use more publically funded medical and social services, due to the aforementioned lower income level.
Although I could go on, because the issue is very complex and far reaching,
I’ve said enough. The sad thing is, our children are not so clueless as you would think. Irresponsible behavior by our elected officials, like the public is currently witnessing, only teaches the next generation that honesty is nothing more than a temporary commodity to be exploited for short term gain. Now there’s a role model for you.

Karl is right. The argument about Illegal Aliens only doing jobs that Americans won’t do is a justification that is used by bleeding hearts who think we owe the entire world a free ride and everything wrong with the world is somehow our fault. They are willing to give away our country in an effort to help those who are “less fortunate”. To claim that if we removed the Illegal Immigrants from this country would some how destroy the economy is preposterous at best.
It is time, long past actually, that those who defend Illegal Aliens being here consider that the situation is tearing our country down. When our country has been destroyed by the very people that some thought we were helping, who will save the world then? Where in the world will the next “saviors of society” come from when we have given our country away and have nothing left to give.
The issue of Illegal Immigration is simple. There are provisions for people to come to this country by legal means. Many have done exactly that and are contributors to our society. However, to come to this country by any means other than through legal channels makes the immigrant nothing more than a criminal. They are hear illegally. They are breaking the law. Get it?
I know there are those who would quickly point out that we are a nation populated and built by immigrants from all over the world. That is true. But consider this, the immigrants who came here years ago came here to be Americans because it was better than their homeland. They came here to escape persecution or just to have the opportunity to live free and make a good life for themselves and their families. But, regardless of their motivation, they came to America to be Americans.
Many of the immigrants who come here now want not to be Americans but rather foreigners living in America. We don’t need them and they will, by their very existence here, destroy our country and there are those here who would help them do it. The Illegal Aliens do not wish to destroy this country but they have no appreciation for the dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance that is required from them to keep this country as great as the one they dreamed of being a part of. Those that do realize these things come here legally and are not the problem.
Yes, we are a country of immigrants to be sure. However, being a country built by immigration does not mean we have to continue as such. If one is building a brick home, one stops ordering bricks when the home is complete. America is not God’s gift to the world. America is God’s gift to America. I don’t mind (too much) having money taken from my earnings to make the country run and help those who are less fortunate. I do mind having money taken from my earnings to be given to those who don’t even respect our country enough to obey the laws and come here legally.

You make a very good point. As you say, they are here illegally! It matters not whether an accurate statistic exists that would suggest that illegal aliens actually contribute to society, which I find dubious. The simple fact is that they are here illegally. They are breaking the law. How many are paying more than their share? Who cares! They are not supposed to be here and need to go home.
Simple math will demonstrate that, even if the $9 billion figure were accurate, there is still a huge deficit between the tax income provided by them and the expenses incurred by their being here. We need to secure our borders, send the people who are breaking the law by being here away, and keep them out unless they are willing to immigrate here by the legal means already provided for.
And by the way, it has been suggested that if the INS had actually done their jobs and ensured that people who are here on tourist, student, and worker visas did not overstay their welcome (so to speak) 9/11 likely would not have happened.
This is our country but will not be if we continue to give it away. We owe it to no one to allow them to come here at their will without regard to our laws. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION TO THIS COUNTRY IS NOT A GOOD THING AND NOTHING SHORT OF SENDING THEM HOME WILL MAKE IT RIGHT!

I think people focus on Mexican Illegal Immigrants because they are the most prevalent and it is hard for some to tell Mexicans from Cubans. The truth is though, all illegal immigration is against the law and the law should be enforced regardless of the origin of the illegal immigrant.
It is our country and we have the right to choose who comes here and anyone who is here illegally must be deported and banned from immigrating for a period of time, say five years or so. Oh wait, that is already the law. Isn’t it? How about we just adhere to the immigration laws. Seems simple to me. Why is it even a question.

There are numerous things I could say, but I will just put down a link from a former border patrol agent, and something I saw myself.
I was an idiot (and a few years younger) and wound up in jail my first and only time right through 911. I was in Elk River, MN only a few cells down from Zacarias Moussaoui. Since that is the only federal jail in the area, it houses numerous illegals. When the second plane hit about a dozen of them literally cheered. Friggin CHEERED!!!! That changed my entire view on Illegal immigrants.

Every landlord that rents to anyone, pays property taxes. If the landlords do not have tenets, the rents go down, and so do the property taxes. How many non-illegals are willing to work in the fields and orchards harvesting crops? The farmer cannot find people to replace the illegals. There is a simple solution. Throw everyone that employ, and/or hires contractors that employe illegal in jail. That may reduce the expenes, but will raise the cost of living for everyone in the United States.

No Rebecca that’s not true. I can guarantee you that in rural parts of the country, and in many non-urban areas there would be people willing to take those jobs that the illegals are illegally taking, as well as everything else they are conveniently stealing from this country. The fact is with the economy in it’s current state, the last thing we need is another 1 million illegals to pay for. It may not be politically correct, but what is politically correct? It’s obviously not the truth, because the truth is exclusive therefore meaning it’s not politically correct. These statistics don’t lie and, I think people like yourself need to wake up and smell the coffee. Oh and I forgot to mention, two of the biggest gang problems in the country, MS13 and the Mexican Mafia, where do ya think they come from? Not to mention all of the sex offenders. The truth hurts.

Hmmm, 200 billion in suppressed wages. I would guess that is saving us money, so by that logic, illegals save us collectively 180 billion a year, assuming your other figures aren’t exaggerated, which of course they are.
So, I’ll take the illegals and 180 billion in saving, you get rid of them, and eat the 180 billion. Sounds like I win….

I dare to say that unfortunately, the MS13 and the Mexican Mafia may very well be one of the problems that stems from the government allowing the illegal immigration to get out of control over a number of years…Are these gangs coming straight over the border or are these gangs the Americanized Latinos who are legal here because of the way they (actually their parents) worked our flawed system? I’m just throwing out idead…I honestly don’t know the answer to that question…I find it ironic that so many people seem oblivious to what these Mexicans are doing…it’s called very simply…”taking over”…my problem is, people sympathize with these people who are breaking the law and know exactly what they are getting themselves into when they decide to come over here…and the only explanation I’ve ever heard about the mass numbers of Mexicans hopin’ the boarder is…the water and the police in Mexico are awful…The point please? Are you kidding me? Oh and you mexicans by the way, your customer service SUCKS ASS! I suppose we’re good enough to take our money, but we’re not good enough to communicate with…How can you take over businesses in areas where you can’t even communicate with your customers? And stop being such tight asses…when I come through your little drive thru and you mess up my order or fail to put something I ordered and paid for in the bag…don’t hold a Spanish speaking, store meeting in the drive thru window and accuse your customer of lying and trying to steal from you. Make good on your screw up and move on tight wads! It’s NOT that serious…and besides, the customer is always right!!!! You need to get THAT one through your little mexi brains also! The drug related crimes in America are a direct result of the $40 billion drug trafficking trade that Americans send to Mexican Drug Cartels a year. It’s Americans who are at fault for creating the crime, death, and tyranny that exist in both Mexico and America due to their own drug addiction. Gangs exist in America to control the drug dealing and the innocent people who die as a result is due to the addicted drug money Americans greedily create.

How about all the electricity we have to produce as well as the food that has to be brought in, the gas that has to be refined and purchased, the extra wear and tear on everything. from toilet paper to electronics all that extra demand which is a false demand driving up prices just before the holidays because it takes a third quarter report to adjust for the fourth quarter. It seems people like to argue to much. The fact is. I for one don’t like my money being taking from my kids that don’t have insurance and gave to anyone so they can have insurance. I think it sucks that we are having a hard time finding a job and illegals don’t have a problem. I’m jobless and my kids and I are losing our home due to this. While the ILLEGALS have a job and home. Its wrong no matter what. This is a free country for them not us. Even if you own a company and hire an illegal, you the boss are still not as good as the illegal to the goverment. Your a piece of dog poop and they deserve to have everything you have. JUST SUCKS!!!!

alot of the facts on this site are untrue and very biast.
sure we sould try to keep our borders secure, but you can’t just deny a sick person aid. It is the fault of American greed and capitalism anyway that put these people into their third world conditions, but god forbid we actually pick up any of the slack. You should be more concerned with all the money we are wasting on this war in the middle east, and be concerned about our civil rights.

These guys from work they telling me plaes come to my aparment for filling the apaper to have they wive getting welfare or the hospital paper for babies. It ios no good and they going to get some bad stuff happen one day and that one is I am sure because they are no legal and taking all the time fromk the gobernment and they using the bad ID for job and taking form the one who payt taxing to gobernment. They have ID and is cheap in mexico and they coming thru with the mota and other peoples that are in this cars trunk and they hide them in there house and get them more job

The fair tax is NOT the solution, however I do support the idea of a national sales tax to replace all other taxes.
The fair tax just changes the way the government confiscates the wealth of this nation from its people. It does not address the real issue, of government over spending.
Good job on the cost of these illegals. My gowd, we could jumpstart our economy if it weren’t for this parasite.
