Law to stop flying US flags made in China
I think this story makes a very good topic for discussion. Here is a snippet of the story:
The American flag has many labels: Stars and stripes. Old Glory. And sometimes, made in China.
Congress can’t halt the flow of Chinese-made flags, but lawmakers can try to control where they are flown.
“It’s not a major problem facing the nation,” admitted Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif. “But it’s an irritant.”
Chinese-made flags seemed to pop up everywhere after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. People rushed to show their sense of patriotism by buying American flags, and U.S. manufacturers couldn’t keep up with demand.
This raises some questions:
1. Should we care where our flags are manufactured?
2. Does a flag being made in China diminish the patriotism that the flag represents?
3. Are we too obsessed about buying products “Made in the USA”?
4. Isn’t it hypocritical to preach “buy American” and “drive American cars” and “wave American made flags” and then watch TV on your Japanese made bigscreen?
5. Shouldn’t we be pressuring these same lawmakers to stop pushing American companies overseas?
I think this story makes a great starting point for discussion and I would love to see what other people think about this.
