This is what our 110th Congress has achieved
This is exactly the reason why Congress only received a 9% approval rating from American voters.
As of the July 4th holiday, this Congress has only passed 260 laws. That is the least amount of productivity in over three decades. And of these 260 laws that have been passed, 74 of them have been dedicated to the all important job of naming POST OFFICES! The other 148 laws are considered “substantive.” This term is used for far more important laws like requiring that the American flag be flown on Father’s Day.
Both presidential candidates pushed resolutions of their own. Sen. Barack Obama worked to successfully pass a resolution to congratulate the Chicago White Sox on winning the 2005 World Series Championship. Not to be outdone, Sen. John McCain co-sponsored and succeeded in passing a resolution congratulating the University of Arizona Wildcats for winning the 2007 NCAA Division I Softball Championship.
That’s nice. We are in the middle of an economic recession, a major energy crisis and these guys are clowning around with shit that has no bearing on our lives.
These are resolutions as of July 4, 2008
TOP 10 CONGRESSIONAL RESOLUTIONS OF THE 110th CONGRESS
1. S.RES.440: A resolution recognizing soil as an essential natural resource, and soils professionals as playing a critical role in managing our Nation’s soil resources.
2. S.RES.262: A resolution designating July 2007 as “National Watermelon Month”.
3. H.RES.216: Congratulating the men’s volleyball team of the University of California, Irvine, for winning the 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Volleyball National Championship.
4. S.RES.180: A resolution recognizing the 70th anniversary of the Idaho Potato Commission and designating May 2007 as “Idaho Potato Month”.
5. H.RES.630: Congratulating the Warner Robins Little League Baseball Team from Warner Robins, Georgia, on winning the 2007 Little League World Series Championship.
6. H.RES.970: Expressing support for designation of June 30 as “National Corvette Day”.
7. H.RES.1050: Recognizing Pittsfield, Massachusetts, as being home to the earliest known reference to the word “baseball” in the United States as well as being the birthplace of college baseball.
8. H.RES.89: Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that a day should be established as Dutch-American Friendship Day to celebrate the historic ties of the United States and the Netherlands.
9. H.RES.892: Expressing support for designation of a “National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day”.
10. H.RES.483: Recognizing the 63rd Anniversary of Big Bend National Park, established on June 12, 1944.
This is our government at work. It’s only a matter of time that “We the people” get tired of this shit and start forming a truly powerful third party to (as Jesse Jackson would put it) “Cut their nuts off.”

You’re right, Congress is wasting their time on this kind of tripe. On the other hand, pretty much any law congress passes these days is unconstitutional, increases spending, or serves special-interest lobbyists.
So I’d rather they be wasting their time doing nothing than messing up our lives even more with their ill-thought-out legislation.

Why is it a bad thing when congress does nothing? I’d consider it a good year if they all just didn’t show up.

What the hell does a bill congratulating a sports team actually do? Does someone call them? Do they get a certificate? This is so f-d.
If we want our government to last it should be incredibly hard to pass laws. Didn’t we have all we needed when the bill of rights were written?

I’ve been really digging into the period in and around American Revolution over the last couple of years. It is absolutely amazing that we went from being led by some of the greatest men (and women, i.e. Abigail Adams) in the history of humanity, to being led by this ridiculous pack of idiots. Look up some of Jefferson’s quotes. They are incredibly relevant even 230 years later.
