Immigration in the The United States

Immigration is apart of what America has been since 1675. And immigration is going to be a debate this year for the Presidential election. So I was curious as to know what are the statistics of immigration for The United States. Well here they are:

The U.S. population grew by 2.8 million between July 1, 2004, and July 1, 2005. Hispanics accounted for 1.3 million of that increase. If current birth rate and immigration rates were to remain unchanged for another 70 to 80 years, the U.S. population would double to nearly 600 million. Our current estimated population is 304,558,000. The Census Bureau’s estimates actually go as high as predicting that there will be one billion Americans in 2100, compared with one million people in 1700 and 5.2 million in 1800.

In 2006, a total of 1,266,264 immigrants became legal permanent residents of the United States, up from 601,516 in 1987, 849,807 in 2000, and 1,122,373 in 2005. The top twelve migrant-sending countries in 2006, by country of birth, were Mexico (173,753), People’s Republic of China (87,345), Philippines (74,607), India (61,369), Cuba (45,614), Colombia (43,151), Dominican Republic (38,069), El Salvador (31,783), Vietnam (30,695), Jamaica (24,976), South Korea (24,386), Guatemala (24,146), Other countries - 606,370. In fiscal year 2006, 202 refugees from Iraq were allowed to resettle in the United States. Muslim immigration to the U.S. is rising and in 2005 alone more people from Muslim countries became legal permanent U.S. residents, nearly 96,000. More than in any year in the previous two decades.

The Census Bureau projects that by 2050, one-quarter of the population will be Hispanic. In 35 of the country’s 50 largest cities, non-Hispanic whites are or soon will be in the minority. In California, non-Hispanic whites slipped from 80% of the state’s population in 1970 to 43% in 2006.

In 2006 a poll found 68% of Americans said US immigration levels are too high, and just 2% said they are too low. They also found that 70% said they are less likely to vote for candidates that favor increasing legal immigration. The poll was conducted by the Center for Immigration Studies.

After reading what I’ve read, I don’t want to hear anymore nonsense on how the world hates us when we are bringing in over a million immigrants a year. Over the past 50 years, 20% of the world’s immigrants live in the U.S. while Europe holds 33%. As of 2006, the United States accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than any other country in the world. In 2006, the number of immigrants totaled 37.5 million. Did you know that there are approximately 12 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S.? In my opinion we do need to slow down immigration in the U.S. and we do need to start enforcing laws on illegal immigrants. I do support immigration but you have to come over here the legal way, not by crossing the border and invading our country.

Very interesting post and the MSN article was well worth reading as well.
It would be great to see the emphasis on the immigration debate shift towards economics; especially considering the ‘$652 billion in lost output’ figure put forward in the MSN piece.
When it comes to immigration the American people should be mindful of the old saying - be careful what you wish for…
